I came to Stanford for my 2026 John S. Knight Journalism Fellowship with a single question: What happens when you introduce journalism practices into public libraries, not simply to produce more news, but to build an ongoing public practice around the information their communities need?

I had already begun exploring that question through my work with the Brooklyn Public Library. But the JSK Fellowship gave me time to understand exactly what I was building and to see how far the idea could go.

I’ve spent much of my time, when not barbecuing with my fellow fellows, in conversation with librarians, journalists, researchers, civic organizers, designers, educators, funders and local residents.

Over the course of the year, I spoke with people in communities across the United States and beyond, from Brooklyn and Birmingham to Vancouver, São Paulo, Lisbon and Japan.
