Lawrence Cremin Oral History Project - Incite at Columbia University

Completed Project

Lawrence Cremin Oral History Project

Incite Institute partnered with Columbia Teachers College on an oral history project documenting the life and work of Lawrence Cremin, an educator, historian, author, and administrator who helped shape Teachers College over four decades.

Cremin broadened the study of American educational history beyond the school-centered analysis dominant in the 1940s, advocating a more comprehensive approach: examining the other agencies and institutions that educate children, integrating the study of education with other historical subfields, and comparing education across international boundaries.

The project produced around twenty interview sessions with ten interviewees—colleagues, family, and those influenced by him—weaving together a comprehensive history that connects biographies, experiences, and analyses of those interviewed.
