Initiated in September 2016 with support from the Columbia Center for Oral History Research, the Columbia Life Histories Project has conducted more than 50 oral history interview sessions with approximately 30 Columbia University graduate students. By taking a longform life history approach to the study of young scholars' paths to and through Columbia—along with the challenges, responses, and meanings that emerge from these experiences—interviewers Mario Alvarez and Benji de la Piedra (both CC '14, GSAS '16) have sought to intervene creatively and restoratively in ongoing debates about equity, diversity, inclusion, and student needs in higher education. The Project will culminate at the end of this summer with an exhaustive report that synthesizes findings and offers critical policy recommendations, addressed to Columbia GSAS Dean Carlos Alonso. All interviews, subject to narrator review and donation, will be preserved in their entirety at the Columbia Center for Oral History Archives.

Please join Mario and Benji in Knox 509 on Monday, May 14, to celebrate the Columbia Life Histories Project's near-completion, meet Project narrators and supporters, hear some of Mario and Benji's most crucial findings, and participate in a talk-back towards the composition of their final report. The presentation and talk-back will run from 7:00pm to about 8:15pm. Light refreshments will be served.
